In this article, we will discuss the process of configuring OpenVPN client 2.6.6 to connect to a pfSense server running version 2.6.0. After experiencing compatibility issues with default settings, I have documented my findings and solutions to help others who may encounter similar problems.

The first challenge was resolving an issue with certificate depth checking, which required a specific patch set for pfSense. Once this was addressed, we were able to achieve compatibility by setting the following parameters: `auth` = `none`, `cipher` = `AES-256-CBC`, and `digest` = `SHA256`.

Notably, OpenVPN 2.6.0 requires more explicit configuration settings than its predecessor, version 2.4.4. This was evident in the numerous settings that needed to be specified manually, as opposed to relying on default values.
